When Robert Bates marries Mandy, a girl from the town, his parents do not approve. Robert is from an old farming family and he is turning his back on farming by establishing a motor maintenance garage at the bottom of their garden. But Mandy and Robert are happy, and become even happier when Mandy becomes pregnant. But the threat of miscarriage and a difficult birth leaves Mandy unhappy and lost. Their son, however, is a fighter, soon able to leave hospital, delighting everyone with his warmth and sunny smile. And then tragedy strikes once more, leaving Robert and Mandy with more than ever to cope with.
