The gray blanket of smoke rolled across the back of the stage. People ran in all directions, screaming. Julie was pulled this way and that. Instinctively she moved forward, away from the smoke and the hungry crack-crack sound of the flames.
The leading performers' were still marching up and down next to the footlights, but beyond them the audience was heading for the front doors. They were no longer a group of well-dressed people clapping and laughing at the make-believe.
They were a blind, frightened mass, climbing over seats and jumping from the balcony and pushing ahead like dumb animals. .
