Crises at work and at home have driven Frank Slattery from his comfortable life as a university lecturer and into the Australian outback in search of opals. His journey brings him to the desolate tourist station of Milrallah which, out of season, has only four residents: owners Jim and Kate Sutton, and drunken losers Jo Rescher and Willy Henderson. Slattery's arrival destroys their delicate equilibrium and triggers a sequence of events that is to lead to tragedy. A beautiful portrayal of frustrated ambition and desire.
