When Ali is picked up wounded in Afghanistan, he clings desperately to his Kalaznikov rifle, his identity as a boy soldier. Recovering, Ali lives with the medicos, learning how to mend rather than kill. But noises in his head mean shrapnel is buried deep and needs specialist treatment. So begins Ali's odyssey. He travels to an Alpine clinic that treats children from many wars and cultures, including Sophie, victim of her classmates in England. Slowly Ali awakes to a vision of his future, and with the help of Sophie, studies to be a spokesperson for the children of the world.
