This is the story of a horse trainer from the racetrack in Kentucky, who makes a journey through the old west in the late eighteen hundreds, match racing against the horsemen he meets. Match racing is a world apart from organized racing. The only rules in match racing are what you negotiate them to be. It is a world populated by semi-con men and gamblers. If you are not extremely careful it can be hazardous to your health, because some of the players are poor losers, who would rather fight than pay. Our story will furnish the reader an insight into the world of match racing, where it takes more than the best horse to be successful. It will also give you a sense of the dangers faced by a man traveling the long desolate trails of the undeveloped west. He must be on the alert at all times to protect himself and his horses from thieves and bandits. The Author understands how the game is played in both organized and unorganized racing. He was involved in match racing in California for several years before he went to the racetrack as a trainer.
