Nurse Robin Thale had no desire to leave her hospital job, even temporarily, to visit her sick, possibly dying uncle, in a small colony in the north of Michigan. Her reluctance had two causes: the inclement snowy weather in the North, and her wish not to seem to be coveting her uncle's money. So she was relived to find that a young doctor was the possible heir and that she might indeed not inherit at all. Her relief was short-lived, however; adding insult to autocracy, the old man indicated he expected her to marry the doctor.
