These nine stories, scenes from faraway youth, would have been misremembered, truncated, and come into the present morphed into something distinct from what they once were; yet they still bear the better telling. It is warranted, since all nine tales taken from Mercury do knit and meld themselves together to form a better whole to create a most pleasing portrait of the distant past.
