Why would Meyer Lansky, the central banker and most brilliant brain in organized crime, seek counsel from attorney Joshua Rabb at the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Tucson, Arizona? Who put the corpses of two Chassidic Jews on the nearby Papago Indian Reservation? And how did such infamous figures as Lucky Luciano, Frank Costello, Bugsy Siegel, and Joseph Bonanno fit into this increasingly perilous puzzle?
These are some of the perplexing questions that demand answers from Rabb, who divides his time between working for the Bureau and trying to make ends meet in his Arizona law practice. Rabb has made a new life for himself here, far from his Brooklyn roots. But he must draw upon his New York savvy when east Coast corpses dot the desert, and both Italian and Jewish hitmen join with local thugs in a mysterious turf war for an unknown prize. At the same time, he is faced with the seemingly impossible task of defending a Papago man accused of raping and murdering a young woman. When grisly evidence links the man Rabb's defending with the mob's murderous mayhem, Joshua knows he's in deep. But he doesn't realize how deep until he finds his teenage daughter dating the handsome young son of Mafia don Joe Bonanno, who has made Tucson his base of operations. Now Rabb is forced to seek help not only from the FBI, but from a man on the other side of the law...and in an awesome race against time, he must deal with a discovery so shocking, it threatens to shatter his faith in his work and in himself.
