Seven Years ago, Lieutenant Vance Guilfoy arrived from Korea the evening before he was expected and beat his wife to death because, it was assumed, he found her with another man.

But who the man was had never been discovered, nor what became of Vance, who completely disappeared. Was he alive or was he hidden in some unknown grave?

Such was the situation when the missing man's sister, seven years later, suddenly heard her brother calling her by night and carried on a brief conversation with him from her window before, as previously, he abruptly disappeared. Had the voice been that of an imposter ? If not, what, for the second time, had become of Vance? And who was the lover whose presence had presumably driven Vance to murder?
