It was her cousin Lisbeth's plea for help that brought Victoria Burnly to Northriding. But she arrived too late, for Lisbeth was already dead. Yet Lisbeth had left behind a son, and he too begged Victoria for help. And so she decided to remain at Northriding, although Nicholas Hastings, her cousin's husband and the master of the gloomy mansion, made it plain she was not welcome.
