"What is it about you that's so like Iris?" Roger Blacker said, a note of anger in his voice. From their first meeting, Gale Garrett found his attitude troubled her. What was the mystery that surrounded the death of Roger's fiancee?
Gale had returned to Lokstead after the death of her mother to help support her crippled father and her teenage brother. She took over her mother's position of secretary/receptionist at the Wherry Country Club and soon found herself involved in the matrimonial tangle of her employers, Mona and Andrew Francis, particularly over the care of their young son, Simon. Roger Blacker was his teacher but their shared concern for the child did little to draw Gale and Roger together. "There's too much pain in loving," he said. "Never fall in love" but it was advice that Gale found very difficult to follow.
