My Life As a Dog — Reidar Jonsson

While his mother is dying of tuberculosis and his father is away at sea, thirteen-year-old Ingemar is farmed out to relatives, pseudo-relatives and the children's home. His valiant attempts to manage life "in spite of it all" are both tragic and hilarious.
