The town of Hawthorn's most prominent citizen was Gerald Stoner, Chairman of the Board of the local bank. Its Chief of Police was Dick Farley, and one of Hawthorn's two detectives was Russ Harrison, who came up with the horrifying theory that Gerald Stoner was a murderer. He proved it, too, but not before Chief Farley and a number of other people almost had heart failure at the prospect of Hawthorn's most dreadful scandal.
