When N.Y.P.D. Captain Bill Donovan agreed to spend a night atop a scientist friend's crow-research outpost in New York's Central Park, he never expected to find a bloody corpse the next morning. The victim, as it turns out, was a middle-aged cyber-stalker whose obsession with an amateur exhibitionistic Web site drove him into stalking the site's star - the teenage daughter of a famous Beat poet. While she is obviously the prime suspect, there are many others who also fit the bill - her jealous and hot-tempered boyfriend, a gang of rollerblading hoods, a touchy rookie cop, and a pair of eccentric scientists with an old score to settle.
Disguised as a member of the empire city's wandering homeless, Donovan begins spending nights in the city's legendary wilderness, an intricate maze full of false leads and dead ends where nothing is as it seems. He must use everything he has to solve the mystery and to track down the killer, all the while sidestepping a nasty boss who's out to get him, and dealing with the joys and sorrows of parenthood - one aspect of which will shock even the sharpest-eyed of Donovan readers.
