The recurring dream of a big white house on a hill, a house that seemed to float on the slope like a ship, its chimneys like masts reaching into the sky -- and of a tall man with piercing blue eyes -- had brought Ben Lathrop back to Connecticut.
Before he reached Winfield, Ben had his first glimpse of the dark-haired girl in the gray suit -- and knew that she was somehow linked with his future, a future that included the old house that had reminded his mother of living in the wing of a museum, but to Ben was like coming home.
Time, Ben thought, wasn't like a river. It was like a mirror or a succession of mirrors -- reflecting himself and the men who had lived here before him. In a strange way, he was those men, going back to the first Eben Lathrop who had built this house.
Now the house and a way of life was being threatened. Not only must Ben fight for his heritage, but also for the love of beautiful Holly Deane.
