Her mother a suicide, her father dead from an accident in which she was involved, lovely Rita Myles attempts to exorcise the devil within her. It all starts out when she was asked to uncover the mystery of the 'hanging suicides' at a private clinic. -- Somewhere, somehow in the terror filled days that followed, was the answer to her own horror. Posing as a disturbed patient she felt herself inescapably caught up in the madness of the patients, never quite sure she might not become one of them.

It was an extraordinary assignment but one for which auburn-tressed Rita Myles was uniquely qualified--as a consequence of the tragic events that had marked her life seven years earlier. In rapid succession her mother, suffering intense pain from a spinal injury, had committed suicide, and then her wealthy father had been killed when the brakes on a borrowed car failed while Rita was at the wheel.

Unable to cope with her overwhelming grief and her sense of guilt over her father's death, Rita has suffered a nervous breakdown. After undergoing psychiatric treatment at Dr. Henry Sanford's private hospital, she made a full recovery and eventually returned to the hospital to work as a staff psychologist. Now she was in a position to do a favor for kindly Dr. Sanford--a favor that entailed tracking down a ghost!

By arrangement with good-looking Dr. Rupert Hart, a renowned psychiatrist and a friend of Dr. Sanford's, Rita was to pose as a patient at Midhaven, an exclusive halfway house administered by Dr. Hart for a small group of wealthy patients. Until recently Midhaven had boasted a high recovery rate, but over a period of eight months three of Dr. Hart's patients had committed suicide--all by hanging!

Although the incidents had been shielded from the press, local tongues were wagging with the grisly speculation that the ghost of the humpbacked millionaire who had built Midhaven was still haunting its premises. Rita's assignment, as one terror-filled day followed another, was to unveil the "ghost"--or becomes its next victim!
