Anise accompanied little Bonnie Lockwood to her father's estate in Mendocino because she had promised to look after Bonnie when her mother died. From the moment Anise and Bonnie arrived at Mendolair it was oblivious they were most unwelcome a vicious dog mysteriously got loose and tried to attack them, shots were fired at them on the grounds of the estate, and someone tried to drown Bonnie while she was swimming in a nearby lake.
