Man Who Met the Train — Harold Adams

On his way to Sioux Falls to work as a sign painter, Carl Wilcox comes upon a car wreck and rescues the sole survivor, 4-year-old Alma Ellison, whose mother dies in the accident. Partly because Alma seems to want him to stay, Carl accepts Judge Carlson's request that he investigate the somewhat mysterious deaths of Alma's parents.
