People who knew her credited Glenda Webster with having won a monumental struggle over the shabbiness, indolence and indifference of her family. For struggle it had been -- learning to talk right, dress right, to carry herself with dignity and converse intelligently, in the face of a disheveled mother, a sullen father, and two young brothers constantly spoiling for trouble.

And now it looked as though her efforts were paying off. She was happy in her job at Dansford Public Library -- and one day she had caught the eye of Andrew Thorndyke, who fell at once for Glenda's delicate beauty, her air of cool reserve. The Thorndyke's were Dansford's first family, and when Drew avowed his love for Glenda, it seemed safe to contemplate the marriage that would complete her journey up from the dregs of society.

It was then that young Pete and Judd Webster made headlines in an escapade that brought disgrace to all the Webster's, and Glenda's one thought was escape -- from the family that had always dragged her down, from the aristocratic bachelor who could not now link his name with hers.

But though there is comfort being in another place, Glenda cannot escape the values she has set for herself. When she learns this -- thanks to the sympathetic interest of handsome Terry Marlow -- she finds that a very special world, that of love, had opened to her.
