Fresh out of law school, red-haired Gail Roberts returns to the West Virginia mining town of her birth to become a law partner with her uncle Ben, a wise old soul with years of legal and political experience behind him.
It is Gail's fervent mission as a lawyer to file -- and win, if possible -- a suit against old Man Williams, the powerful owner of the local Lucky Cover Mine, where over the years Gail's father has contracted a fatal case of “black lung” from the mine's unsanitary air. She also picks up the banner for five widows who have all lost husbands owing to poor working conditions in the Lucky Clover.
But Old Man Williams is not about to let a young upstart lawyer like Gail make a fool of him with her scandalous lawsuit. And neither are three charming and ambitious young men -- a doctor, a lawyer, and young Hank Williams himself -- who all have a stake in protecting the Lucy Clover, though each of the three is an ardent suitor of Gail herself.
Just how Gail, sustained by the worldly tutelage of Uncle Ben, is about to turn the tables on the formidable male faction opposing her, and yet find from among her opponents the right man for her, provides an exciting climax -- and tribute -- to a determined young woman's fight for justice.
