Nikky worked for the Colonial Foundation which established an 18th Century colony in the Berkshires. She wore Colonial costumes and helped recreate the spirit of early America. Nicole Blair longed for old-time quiet, peaceful days. So when she learned the Colonial Foundation planned to establish an Eighteenth Century colony in Bayberry Corners, in the Berkshires, she went to work full time for the enterprise. She had the opportunity to wear extremely becoming Colonial costumes and to recreate the spirit of early America, and with a fellow worker -- a young man who shared her ideals and wishes. Unfortunately, it was not quite so simple to span the centuries.

“Why don't you speak for yourself, John?”

Everyone around Nicole Blair seemed to make decisions for her life; her mother, the glamorous Francesca -- the toast of society on two continents; Mrs. Charles Rockmore Adams -- head of the Colonial Foundation and Nicole's boss; Henry Clay Adams -- the young man who, because of their common interests, was “right” for her; and Curt Randolph -- the man whom she shared nothing…except perhaps love.

Nicole was fascinated with the project that would recreate colonial days in an idyllic Massachusetts setting. But when Hank Adams asked her to marry him, Nicole had to face modern day reality. Could she promise herself to Hank while in her heart she loved Curt? And why did Curt seem so eager to play the “John Alden” role and encourage her to marry Hank? Could Nicole muster up the courage to ask Curt, “Why don't you speak for yourself, John?”
