William Newman was the son of a dedicated British Loyalist. Growing up in the South Carolina backcountry, he had never questioned his father's loyalty to England or to King George III. He, too, had always considered himself a loyal subject to King and country. But when the armies of the British empire invaded South Carolina in 1780, a violent civil war erupted in the backcountry. This new war pitted friend against friend and neighbor against neighbor. As William witnessed the injustices and atrocities of the war, he began to question the King's actions and his father's loyalties. But, could he ever go against his father's politics and wishes? Would he actually take up arms and go to war against the mightiest army in the world?
