All through her medical training, Carlinda "Lindy" Haynes had been so sure what she wanted to be: a neurosurgeon like Dr. Dave Banner whose operating skill once saved her life. But when a big city hospital offered her a residency, Lindy found she wasn't so sure about things after all.

"Take a year to think about it," Dr. Banner advised. "Go into practice somewhere. In fact, I know just the place..."

The "place" was Doc Zeb Zaccaro's little hospital high in the mountains of Southern California. Here Lindy's attempts to reach a decision about her future were soon complicated by the disturbing presence of Chuck Winfield, an angry young surgeon with a difficult choice of his own to make -- a choice, as things turned out, that seemed destined to break Dr. Lindy's heart...
