Gascoyne and his wife Nancy, a romantic novelist, separate when she discovers he has been unfaithful and is rewriting her latest novel. Nancy works as a part-time receptionist for a doctor's office, where the arrival of a new locum doctor, Monclar, arouses her interest. Meanwhile, Gascoyne unsuccessfully struggles to hold down his high pressure job as a lawyer and soon turns to alcohol. When he is fired before he can complete his novel, he takes a job as a night porter at a hotel to conduct research. Just when all seems relatively clam, a murderer suddenly strikes and both Gascoyne and Nancy are drawn into a chain of sinister events.
