Continuing the story where JOEL III Back to Normal left off, the Johnson clan looks forward to living a normal life. While vacationing in Florida, fire destroys their home forcing them to live in temporary quarters while a new and larger home is being built. Crane's business ventures continue to flourish as well as the foundation to help youngsters in foster care get adopted. Crane's philanthropy affects many people that come in contact with the family. Joel's relationship with a classmate intensifies, while Crane's love life is thwarted at every turn despite his best efforts. Hildy, their live-in housekeeper/cook/nanny and surrogate grandmother to the boys, continues to be the glue that holds the family together. As in the earlier adventures of the boys, other children in need are helped by their association with the family. One of these is Ricky, the son of their part-time housekeeper, Marie. Ricky's left leg is missing below the knee, but his peg-leg doesn't slow him down.
