Sherry Sadler, a newcomer at Avondale High School, had had enough ups and downs in her short life to take both good fortune and bad luck with equanimity and to laugh away minor worried. When a trip to the supermarket, in which she spent the last of her mother's hard-earned money for groceries, ended in a fall and batch of broken eggs, Sherry took the incident in good spirits and was thankful that it gave her a chance to meet some of her new classmates.
Her attitude puzzled Judy Scotts, a “poor little rich girl” who found it difficult to make friends, and antagonized Mona Delane, a serious-minded student who, in order to have a cause, invented crises where none existed. But Geary Cleveland, Mona's co-worker, was attracted by the new girl's infectious gaiety.
