In 1869, dismissed from her employment with Lady Howarth after being falsely accused of stealing, Mairin Houlihan emigrates to New Zealand. There she meets Marcus, the son of Lady Howarth, who had emigrated there to farm sheep. But later, despite her innocence, Mairin is held on remand on suspicion of murder.
