Alison travels to beautiful Windswept Island to research a biography of deceased composer Thordsen, who lived and worked in what is now Greenwood Inn -- where Alison boards. By day Alison researches the composer and is courted by three young men; at night she experiences eerie noises in her bedroom.

Young, attractive Alison Blair was irresistibly drawn to Windswept Island, the beautiful home of the late composer Leighton Thordson. Alison knew that staying in the inn that had once been Thordson's residence, seeing the views that had inspired him, and using the piano on which he had composed his music would help her finish her biography of the legendary composer. What she didn't know was that her questions about Thordson would put her life in danger.

Almost from the moment she reaches Windswept Island, Alison is caught in a maze of mystery and drama. What is responsible for the strange solitude of the couple next door? How to explain the mysteries surrounding the musician's death? Where is the missing manuscript of his last score? Why is there a secret passageway leading from Alison's closet to the neighboring house?

As Alison seeks the answers to these questions, and pieces together the life of Leighton Thordsen, her own heart struggles with conflicting emotions. While trying to forget a romance that ended in anger, Alison discovers herself drawn to two different men: Bob Beale, a dashing, independent filmmaker, and Chris Durmont, a moody but handsome former POW who has bought the inn on Windswept Island and plans to renovate it. As both men compete for Alison's affections, the young writer makes some unexpected discoveries about Leighton Thordsen -- discoveries too bizarre to be included in her book.
