Charles and Jim return to Denver, and Charles discovers that Frank Johnson has filed a lawsuit against him for destroying his subdivision plans and has filed for bankruptcy to avoid having to return money to people that bought property with the expectations of having a hospital nearby. Charles seeks the help of Attorney William Bulger of Boston, whose father had previously owned the construction company in Vallejo. The lawsuit has a surprising twist, and many don't know what to do after it is settled in court, and the explosive outcome. Charles hires a construction crew to begin building a home, office, and barn for Dr. Samuelson. Charles and Dr. Jim Samuelson return to Vallejo, and Charles is pleased with the way Kuo Chang has assumed his duty as Head Gardner. Charles receives a telegram relating to the construction office in Philadelphia. His accountant, Caleb Coffee, was beaten and robbed. Charles and the family return to Philadelphia and Charles and Blank take matters into their own hands when a local sheriff in New Hampshire doesn't want to do anything about the beating and robbery.
