Every school year at Moreland Magnet High School, the sophomore girls rush to their lockers at the end of the school day on the last Monday in September to see if they have been chosen to be a part of the most popular group in school, the Sapphires Social Club. Only a select few are chosen, and for those lucky few, there is the promise of popularity and high school fame. But first, the chosen ones have to complete initiation.
Queenie Sims, a popular cheerleader with a basketball star boyfriend, believes that being a Sapphire is her destiny. Taylor Tafford, a tennis player, is a reluctant participant in a bet that she can't make it through initiation. Chanel Saunders, an honor student from the projects, is looking to secure her status among Moreland's rich kids. Anna Maria Reed-Martinez, a chubby fifteen-year old struggling to lose weight, sees the Sapphires as a way for her peers to accept her.
The four girls discover that initiation is harder than they ever thought it would be. Each of them will have to make decisions that will affect their lives. And in the end, they will each have to decide if being a Sapphire is truly worth the total price of admission.
