Dylan, Andy, and Elliana (Ellie to her friends) have been passionate about their band, BlackStar, for as long as Ellie can remember. She loves the buzz of performing and the magical adulation from the crowd, and she counts the boys as her best friends, even if they do fight like cat and dog all the time. But Ellie's feelings for Dylan have turned from platonic to something else, just lately, and that's tricky, because Ellie is going out with Andy. It's getting more difficult to cope with her feelings and with Dylan's moody, self-destructive impulses, so when Ellie secretly auditions for a Pop Idol style talent show, she knows she's going to have to make a decision about where her musical future lies -- as a mass-market pop act or a credible indie singer with a cool and original band like Blackstar. Ellie sings a song written by Dylan for her final performance on the talent show and wins. The crowd can't get enough of her, or the song it seems, and that's when Ellie's conscience kicks in. Can she really betray Dylan to serve her own needs? And does her heart really belong with Blackstar after all? As she stands to receive her winning ovation, Ellie makes a courageous decision.
