House of Echoes — John Marsh

Harry Ashley escapes from the police after becoming innocently involved in a girl's death. Given help by the strange occupants of Heronsmere, a rambling old house set in a neglected park, he little knows that he is about to start out on a road which, in the end, will lead him to a fortune, then ruin and the brink of death.
