When Sister Rosemary Clare starts work as theater sister at the Birchwood Private Hospital she finds herself thrust unwillingly into the role of the proverbial new broom. In her battle to raise the standards of efficiency in the slackly-run theater she clashes not only with the old-fashioned Matron, but also with the dynamic surgeon Mr. Russell Nicaise. Having taken one look at Rosemary, he seems to dismiss her without giving her a chance. But how can he possibly know anything about her as a theater sister, a nurse or as a woman?
