Alaska is a long way from Atlanta, Georgia, and Sally Perry, who had married Gene Perry and gone to live in an Alaskan homestead, was bitterly homesick. So she sent an urgent appeal to her sister, Kathy Claxton, to spend her summer vacation in the Matanuska Valley.

While she was still on the Anchorage-bound plane, she was introduced to Alaskan hospitality in the person of her seat mate, a prominent businessman; at the airfield, her impression of welcome was reinforced by Jed Hanson, an attractive young man who had volunteered to meet her. The colorful vegetation and picturesque scenery of the region fascinated Sally; and as the days stretched into weeks and her vacation was prolonged indefinitely, she became less and less able to understand her sister's unhappiness and depression.

"Jumping a Claim" on Jed

Kathy Claxton left her job and her devoted fiance in Atlanta, Georgia, to answer an urgent appeal from her sister -- a recent Alaskan homesteader. But Kathy's two-week vacation stretched into months, 'first by her enchantment of the country, then by her sister's mysterious illness, and then by the warmth of the welcome she received from all the homesteaders -- especially the welcome and attention she was getting from handsome, exciting Jed Hanson, a bush pilot and the son of one of Alaska's first families.

But Jed "belonged" to wealthy and glamorous Carla Morgan who warned Kathy not to "jump her claim" on Jed. Would Kathy remember her promise to her fiance in Atlanta, or would she follow the mad poundings of her heart when Jed was near?
