When Cousin Vicky was banished to the family's country house on Dartmoor, to separate her from the penniless Captain with whom she had dared to fall in love, Hannah was deputed to act as Vicky's chaperon.

Hannah was no bread and butter Edwardian miss. She had a mind of her own and was apt to ask inconvenient questions, as the new Earl of Moorhaverton quickly discovered. Hannah wanted to know why his small son was terrified of him, and what was this mysterious “hawk” which had attacked both the child's ayah and a defenceless fugitive from justice.

The Earl was dangerously attractive, but Hannah's warm heart went out to the injured, bemused Jake. She had to befriend him, whatever the consequences. She had to aid and abet Vicky's romance, too.
