Farmer's daughter Phyllis Pitkin hoped to continue her satisfying existence after she was married to Tom Kirby, who shared her abiding passion for the earth. In the meantime, however, she temporarily feigned indifference to Tom so that he would not be too sure of her. This meant that Tom was unable to give her support when her sister, Marge, was faced with a domestic crisis. On the other hand, Phyllis was obliged by the circumstances to see a great deal of Marge's physician, young Dr. Dawson.
