Alaska bush pilot Alex Price gets a frantic phone call from Renaldo, his old college roommate. Renaldo has purchsed a bar in Anchorage. When a bag man came to collect the monthly extortion ("insurance") Renaldo used a pool cue to send him scrambling and bleeding, but the bag man was front for a mob and they'll be back. Alex flies to Anchorage to play a combination Sherlock Holmes and Wyatt Earp. The chase includes the bars and fringe establishments in Anchorage and Fairbanks interlaced with the Yupik Eskimo culture.
