Returning to San Francisco after the First World War, journalist Denis Mallory finds that his job hasn't been kept open for him. But he hears that the Kyle Baths are looking for an assistant manager and decides to look into it. Denis soon finds himself falling in love with the glamorous and wealthy Marina Kyle, but he's poor, and there's absolutely no way he'll allow himself to sponge off her.
