In ancient times, one of the twelve labours of Hercules was to go to 'Golden Apple Island', the garden of Hesperides -- better known to us today as the Canary Islands -- and bring back a "golden apple", or orange . In our own day, so did Fran Page go to this romantic island, and found equally difficult of attainment the prospect she yearned for. Fran and her Spanish mother had gone out for an indefinite stay with Fran's imperious grandfather, Don Diego de Matteor -- and it was not long before Fran realized that what lay behind the visit was a plan on the old man's part to marry her off to his grandson Gil. Not that Fran would have minded in the least -- but Gil, after all, had his own views on the subject, and while the glamorous Senorita Elena Merced was around, they did not seem very likely to include Fran!
