She loved the man her mother once had.
Helena Clurey seemed to have all that life could possible offer; a devoted husband, sufficient money and a family in which she could take pride. She is happy and secure, but suddenly her secure world and present happiness are in danger of being shattered by a dark voice from the past.
"The truth. What exactly do you mean by that, Helena?"
"That I was once your mistress", she said steadily.
Again he appeared to be considering this words carefully before he spoke them.
"That will no be the truth, Helena. You were not my mistress", he said. "You were, and are, my wife."
