When an impoverished Marguerite Bascombe receives an offer to be a music instructor to the young ward of noted industrialist Harlan Graymore, the promise of a new life rears its head. The estate, Fog Island, off the coast of Maine, proves extravagant in its appointments if perhaps a trifle cold. But young Ellen, her pupil, has decided talent and there is the prospect of romance, if Marguerite is willing.
But Fog Island is not the peaceful oasis she had envisioned: the shroud of mist does not keep the troubles away, but seals them in! Family quarrels among the Graymores erupt into wanton violence, and Marguerite finds herself the pawn in a secret drama that seems destined to end in tragedy!
