Timmy Burke is a Boston schoolboy in 1973. He's dodging the Foley brothers , going through puberty and urging the Red Sox to win by sheer willpower. A good deed gets him access to the Boston dugout , where he befriends a slugging phenomenon from Cuba named Manuelito Santos , who comes complete with supernatural aura. Timmy's parish priest , Father Valente dated Tim's Mom , Maureen , in high school. Tim's Dad , Marty , was friend's with both, but now , he drinks. A mobster's son intends bodily harm to Manuelito in the person of his Dad's one-armed envoy so as to rig the post season betting.. Manuelito wants to bring his baseball wealth home to Cuba to help the collective farm he leads. Meanwhile the Jewish baseball scout who signed him, Larry Young , critiques God's work with his drinking buddy , Father Paul. Timmy wants his team to win , but more than anything he wishes for his dad to stay sober. The Sox make a run for the pennant in a re-imagined 1973 season.
