Gr 1-3Jennie and Jimmy aren't happy to hear that they'll be spending the summer on their grandparents' farm, and it isn't until Jennie's grandfather teaches her how to play the fiddle that she begins to enjoy herself. Jimmy often runs off to play with another boy, leaving his sister time to practice when she is done with her chores. When their parents return at the end of the summer, the entire family goes to a ceilidha social gathering featuring traditional Scottish and Irish music and folk dancing. The surprise of the evening isn't Jennie's successful fiddle playing, but rather Jimmy's folk dancing. A pleasant story, positively accented by illustrations whose strong brushstrokes, warm tones, and simplicity harmonize with the text.Lisa Marie Gangemi, Sousa Elementary School, Port Washington, NY
