Still hurt by Martin's sudden desertion, Alison takes a job as typist to Joe Chorley, a successful author. Joe does not try to conceal his love for Alison, and when his alcoholic wife, Myra, falls into the sea and is drowned, malicious gossip accuses him of murder.
