Mae is dying under the oak tree by the Shrine of St. Finnian when a prince of the Tuatha de Danann, the Irish fairies, finds her and takes her home, under the hollow hill. Once there, Mae discovers that her pilgrimage is part of a dangerous and delicate mission that she must now fulfill, with the help of her unearthly host, whose uncanny abilities both frighten and fascinate her.
