Heather Nichols had been brought up in the midst of a warm and happy family in Nichols' Ferry in the Pacific Northwest. Her grandfather, Big Bill Nichols, was known and respected throughout the area and gave Heather prestige in the community; her mother gave her love and affection; her younger brother and sisters alternately worshipped and bedeviled her, and she appreciated both equally.

And yet Heather was faced with two problems: how to help keep the Nichols lumber business intact in spite of rising costs and dwindling business; and how to reconcile her liking for her neighbor, Seth Barclay, with the fact that his family was largely responsible for the Nichols family's business troubles.
