Charles' adventures continue; he has a final confrontation with his hostile neighbor, Eunice Zimmer, and travels to Kentucky to add a few good Thoroughbred mares to his herd. Charles goes to Washington D.C. to talk with President Buchanan regarding the Indian situation, and meets up with his old friend, Colonel Hawks. Charles becomes alarmed after meeting with Colonel Hawks and decides to move his precious Thoroughbreds and his family to Denver so they are not in the line of fire should a war between the north and south erupt. Charles goes to Denver to help his old friend, Hunt-U.S. Marshal, find a man terrorizing ranchers that won't sell their property, and while, in Denver, Charles keeps an eye out for ranches or property to buy for his family and Thoroughbred ranch. Charles returns to Philadelphia and is determined to meet with Abraham Lincoln. Charles goes with George to Springfield, Illinois and visits Abraham Lincoln, shortly after Abe Lincoln makes his famous, “House Divided” speech, and then travels to Litchfield to return the mare he rode across the west to its rightful owner, the surly sheriff of Litchfield.
