Rose Hatcher moved from Philadelphia, to Sugar Creek, Oklahoma, to become their first schoolteacher. She soon adapted to country living and loved it. One of her students, Emily Blackwell, captured her heart. Emily came from a large family with a drunken pa, who abused his wife and children.
