Jessica McClaren is devastated when she learns that Lady, the thoroughbred horse she and her father raised from a sickly colt, is to be transferred to the West Indies estate of her father's employer. When her father is injured, Jessica reluctantly accepts an offer of assistance from Andrew "Mac" Macklin, an intriguing Continental army spy wanted by British redcoats. At first Jessica is wary of the mysterious Macklin, a half-blooded Delaware Indian, but eventually her suspicion turns to friendship as they face numerous dangers together.
