Spring Dalton has becomes entrenched in a rut in her hometown of Detroit. A cousin invites Spring to live with her in Heidelberg, Germany, while Spring pursues her dream of going to art school. Spring decides that now is the time to break out of her rut.
On the trin from Frankfurt to Heidelberg, Matt Sherman, an American teacher working in Heidelburg, literally lands in Spring's lap as the train jerks out of the station, and the two strangers embark on a floundering adventure-falling in love. From the first day, Matt is drawn to Spring, but guilt and anger from his past make him feel unworthy of love.
